More than two months after they were abducted during a church service, security operatives have rescued kidnapped worshippers in Ekiti State, bringing an end to a prolonged search. The rescue, announced on July 4, 2026, was, however, marred by tragedy as one of the victims was confirmed dead.
The worshippers were abducted on April 28, 2026, when suspected gunmen attacked a Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) in Eda-Oniyo, Ilejemeje Local Government Area of the state, killing the pastor and taking 16 worshippers, including women and children, into captivity.
The Ekiti State Police Command said the victims were rescued through a coordinated operation involving the police, the military, the Amotekun Corps, local hunters, and other security agencies. Authorities confirmed that one female victim died while in captivity, while the rescued victims were taken to hospital for medical attention.
The development has renewed concerns over the persistent threat of kidnapping and violent attacks across Nigeria, including assaults on places of worship. While residents and stakeholders have welcomed the successful rescue, the death of one of the abductees underscores the heavy human toll of insecurity. Security agencies say investigations are ongoing and have pledged to apprehend those responsible while strengthening security measures to prevent similar incidents.
