One of Africa’s most influential business leaders, Tony O. Elumelu, is set to retire as Group Chairman of United Bank for Africa (UBA) by August 21 2026, having completed the regulatory tenure allowed for the position.
The announcement marks the end of a significant chapter in UBA’s history. During his time as Chairman, the bank expanded its presence across Africa and strengthened its position as one of the continent’s leading financial institutions, serving millions of customers in multiple countries.
Following the announcement, UBA confirmed that Emmanuel Nnorom has been appointed as the incoming Group Chairman, ensuring a planned leadership transition as the bank enters its next phase.
Tony Elumelu, widely recognised for championing entrepreneurship and economic development through the Tony Elumelu Foundation, leaves behind a legacy that extends beyond banking. His influence has shaped conversations around private sector growth, youth empowerment, and investment across Africa.
As UBA prepares for a new era under Emmanuel Nnorom’s leadership, stakeholders will be watching closely to see how the bank builds on its achievements and navigates the evolving financial landscape.
