The Global President of the Holy Trinity Grammar School (HTGS) Worldwide Alumni Association, High Chief Ambassador Dennis Ifidon Ojeonu, has credited the school with shaping generations of professionals and responsible leaders, saying its values prepared students to overcome life’s challenges and contribute meaningfully to national development.
Speaking with journalists during the association’s July 2026 meeting at Sports HAQ in Lagos, Ojeonu said HTGS equipped its students with the discipline, resilience and leadership skills needed to succeed in different fields.
“HTGS prepared us ahead of time to face life’s challenges,” he said, adding that the institution nurtured its students to become productive members of society.
Ojeonu, who belongs to the 1973–1977 graduating class, said he assumed office as Global President following the association’s Annual General Meeting held during the school’s 77th anniversary celebrations. Having previously served as First Vice Global President, Abuja Chapter Chairman and on several alumni committees, he described the new role as a continuation of his commitment to the institution.
Reflecting on his childhood, he said his father’s positive experiences as a 1953 alumnus inspired him to attend HTGS. “We had no friends in HTGS; we had brothers and sisters,” he remarked, noting that the school’s strong sense of community remains one of its greatest strengths.
He also highlighted the school’s rich legacy, saying HTGS has produced distinguished personalities across public service, the military and other sectors. According to him, the institution gave him opportunities to build lifelong relationships with accomplished professionals and national figures.
Looking ahead, Ojeonu disclosed that the alumni association has mapped out several projects to reposition the school before its 80th anniversary in 2028. He said discussions are ongoing with prominent alumni and other stakeholders to improve teachers’ welfare, renovate ageing infrastructure and restore the institution’s former standards.
He revealed that some alumni currently contribute towards the payment of teachers’ salaries due to limited government support, while efforts are being intensified to mobilise additional resources for the school’s development.
Among the planned interventions are the refurbishment of dilapidated buildings, construction of modern staff quarters with improved facilities, and residences for the principal and vice-principal.
The association is also working towards restoring the school’s boarding house system, which Ojeonu said would attract students from Edo State and beyond, including Lagos and Benin City, as was the case during the school’s early years.
Expressing optimism, he said he hoped many of the projects would be completed before the institution celebrates its 80th anniversary in 2028.
Ojeonu commended the Chairman of the Lagos Branch, Barr. HRM Ohi Philip Eseile, for successfully coordinating the meeting, describing his leadership as exemplary. He also appreciated members of the executive committee and acknowledged Barr. John Bawa Imuzeze, who sponsored the July 2026 meeting, for his generosity and continued support for the association.
He urged all alumni to remain committed to preserving the legacy of Holy Trinity Grammar School and ensuring it continues to produce future generations of leaders for Nigeria.
