World Food Safety Day: NAFDAC Calls for Collective Action to Ensure Safe Food for All

By Ogeyi Ebinyi

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has called on Nigerians to work together to strengthen food safety systems and ensure access to safe, wholesome and nutritious food for everyone. This is in commemoration of World Food Safety Day.

Speaking at the 2026 World Food Safety Day celebration in Lagos, marked on 29th of June, Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, urged stakeholders to renew their commitment to protecting public health through safe food practices.

Represented by the Director of Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, Mrs. Eva Edwards, Adeyeye said the agency is collaborating with the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the National Food Safety Management Committee and other partners to improve Nigeria’s food safety system. She described safe food as a fundamental human right, adding that stronger regulatory systems and public awareness are essential to preventing foodborne diseases.

The event, themed “From Burden to Solutions: Safe Food Everywhere,” highlighted the need for coordinated action across the food supply chain. Adeyeye noted that food safety is everyone’s responsibility—from production and processing to distribution and consumption. “Achieving safe food everywhere requires strong partnerships because food safety is a shared responsibility,” she said. She urged farmers, manufacturers, regulators and consumers to adopt global best practices, including Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), Good Hygiene Practices (GHP), Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and the World Health Organization’s Five Keys to Safer Food, stressing that practical solutions are needed to reduce foodborne diseases and strengthen Nigeria’s food system.
