Journalists have been urged to uphold professionalism by prioritising fact-checking and responsible reporting as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections.
The call was made during the 2026 Press Week of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Lagos State Council, held in Ikeja with the theme, “Journalism and Nation Building: Promoting Accountability and Good Governance.”
Speaking as the Special Guest of Honour, Deputy Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Princess Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, said nation-building depends on informed citizens, which in turn requires a free, responsible and courageous press. She described journalism as a bridge between government and the people, stressing that ethical reporting promotes accountability and strengthens democracy. According to her, at a time when misinformation spreads rapidly, journalists have a responsibility not only to report events but also to safeguard the truth and amplify voices that might otherwise go unheard.
Delivering the keynote address, Dr. Festus Shoba said the theme of the Press Week reflects the country’s pressing challenges. He urged governments at all levels to fulfil their constitutional responsibility of protecting lives and property while delivering the dividends of democracy. Shoba also encouraged eligible Nigerians to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) ahead of the 2027 elections and called on the media to continue holding public officials accountable through accurate and balanced reporting.
Also speaking, Reginald Onyiriolla Ofoegbu, Director of Operations at BOCA Energy and BOCA IT Resources, said nation-building is a shared responsibility that requires active citizen participation. He reaffirmed the company’s support for the NUJ Press Week, describing the media as the “fourth estate of the realm” that plays a critical role in ensuring good governance. He added that BOCA Energy remains committed to partnering with organisations that promote national development.
Representing former House of Representatives member Hon. Ganiyu Abiodun Johnson, Hon. Ajayi Abiodun commended journalists for keeping citizens informed and warned against the growing trend of fake news being used to attack perceived opponents. He urged media professionals to remain committed to truth and ethical journalism.
Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel, NUJ Lagos State Council, said the annual Press Week provides an opportunity for journalists to reflect on the profession and discuss national issues. With the 2027 elections approaching, he said the media must continue to educate the public, promote credible information and encourage citizens to contribute positively to national development.
