Spread the love

International Volunteer’s Day is an international observance mandated by the United Nations General Assembly in 1985. It is a day set aside to celebrate the remarkable efforts and contributions of volunteers globally.

Over the years, the International Volunteer’s Day celebration has evolved to become an avenue to give back to the society, promote a worthy course, advocate for a need to support people in underserved communities and create awareness for those who are internally displaced.

International Volunteer’s Day has been used in many developing countries to achieve sustainable Development Goals such as combating hunger, poverty, disease, health issues, environmental degradation, and gender equality.

To commemorate this year’s International Volunteer’s Day, the “Global Shappers Community” and “Volunteers 4 Cause” Katsina Hub have teamed up to bring smiles and joy to the lives of Katsina state orphans.

The two non-governmental organizations join forces to provide basic needs such as clothes,  groceries, and first aid items to promote the well-being of orphans, show them love, and spread warmth and hope as the harmattan wind settles over Katsina.

In a statement made available by the two non-governmental organizations, they express the need to spread love, warmth, and care for those who are in need, particularly the orphans.

“As the harmattan winds settle over Katsina, it brings cold morning and chilly night, and many in our community face the harsh reality of lacking necessities to stay warm. This is especially true for orphans and vulnerable children who need our care and support”

Speaking on his decade experience as a volunteer, the founding curator of Global Shappers Community, Malam Umar Abdullahi said international volunteer’s Day is a day to demonstrate the power of selflessness.

“International Volunteer’s Day is a day that holds a very special place in my heart. It is a global reminder of the power of selflessness and the profound impact we can create when we come together to help others. As someone who has been deeply involved in volunteering for over a decade, this day is not just about celebrating what we have done but about inspiring others to join this beautiful journey of service”

He further stated that volunteering is not an act of giving, but a way of life.

“IVD is a time to reflect on the essence of humanity, our ability to connect, support, and uplift one another. Volunteering, to me, is not just an act of giving, it’s a way of living. It reminds us that every small act of kindness, every moment spent helping others, adds up to creating stronger, more compassionate communities”.

Umar Abdullahi also added that the two non-governmental organizations choose the Orphanage home to celebrate this year’s International Volunteer’s Day because they wanted to go beyond words and touch lives where it matters most.

“Orphans represent some of the most vulnerable members of our society, and their well-being should be a priority for all of us. For this year’s celebration, we chose to visit the orphanage because we wanted to go beyond words and demonstrate the true spirit of volunteerism, touching lives where it matters most.

The gesture wasn’t about the materials we donated, though they were essential; it was about showing the children that they are seen, valued, and loved. It’s about giving them a sense of belonging and a reminder that they are part of a larger community that cares for them.

As a community development advocate, I believe that every initiative, no matter how small, should aim to create a ripple effect. By celebrating with the orphans, we hope to inspire others to step forward, not just during International Volunteer’s Day, but throughout the year. Because true community development begins when we all take responsibility for those in need around us.”

This initiative is a wonderful way to demonstrate love, care, and support for orphans. It’s important that they know they are not alone and that we stand with them every step of the way.
