The Caise Foundation, a non-governmental organisation, has launched a medical outreach aimed at screening children in Lagos State for various health conditions, including HIV, typhoid, and hepatitis.
Over 300 children in the Ikoyi area benefited from the programme on Saturday, which focused on early detection and treatment of diseases. The initiative underscores the foundation’s commitment to improving access to healthcare for vulnerable populations, particularly children.
Speaking at the event, Derin Phillips, convener of the foundation and Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Lagos State Development and Property Corporation, highlighted the importance of the programme. According to Phillips, many children die from treatable illnesses due to limited access to medical care, a gap the foundation seeks to address.
“We believe early detection and treatment of diseases are essential to securing the health and future of our children,” Phillips said. “By identifying and treating conditions at a young age, we can prevent long-term complications and improve overall quality of life.”
He also called for greater support from other organisations to sustain initiatives that ensure access to healthcare for underprivileged children.
The outreach programme, organised in collaboration with healthcare professionals and partner organisations, offered free medical screenings, diagnoses, and treatments for various conditions. It also included health education sessions for children and their parents to promote regular medical check-ups and healthy living.
One of the health educators at the event, Olawunmi Leji-Tewe, stressed the critical role of early diagnosis. “Knowing your health status early makes a significant difference,” she said. “This programme not only screens for diseases but also educates families on the importance of preventive healthcare.”
The community has well-received the initiative, with many parents expressing gratitude for the opportunity to access free medical services.
“This effort demonstrates how simple, targeted interventions can have a profound impact,” Phillips added. “If everyone contributes within their capacity, we can collectively build a healthier society.”
The Caise Foundation’s outreach underscores the vital need for accessible healthcare and shines a light on the potential of community-driven solutions to address public health challenges.
