A significant step toward transforming Nigeria’s educational progress was taken on July 23, 2025, as the National Working Committee on Inclusive Education, in collaboration with the Basic Education Department of the Federal Ministry of Education, convened a high-level sensitisation workshop in Abuja. The event, themed “Strengthening Inclusive Education for Equitable Learning in Nigeria,” brought together key stakeholders to discuss the effective implementation of the revised National Policy on Inclusive Education.

Addressing participants at the forum, the Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, underscored the government’s unwavering commitment to ensuring that every Nigerian child—regardless of disability, gender, background, or psychosocial condition—is provided with equal learning opportunities. “Inclusive education is not just about placing children with special needs into regular classrooms,” she stated. “It is about transforming our entire educational system to support and embrace diversity.”
Professor Ahmad highlighted the growing momentum across states in domesticating the revised policy, noting that while progress has been made, more effort is needed in the areas of infrastructure, teacher training, awareness creation, financing, and policy execution. She described the workshop as a crucial platform for advocacy and coordination, encouraging participants to be “intentional, practical, and forward-thinking,” as the children of Nigeria “are counting on us.”
Other stakeholders at the workshop shared insights into current challenges and successes in the field, aligning on strategies for creating an inclusive educational environment across the country. The workshop reaffirmed the power of collaboration among policymakers, educators, and development partners in realizing Nigeria’s vision for inclusive and equitable education.
