Residents of Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria, were recently drawn to an unusual sky phenomenon after reports emerged of three sun-like objects appearing simultaneously and forming a circular pattern in the sky. The incident was observed in the early hours of February 4, 2026, and quickly attracted public attention.
Eyewitnesses described seeing three bright sun-like lights: one central Sun with two equally bright spots positioned on either side. A visible circular ring or halo appeared to surround the formation. The occurrence during the morning hours heightened curiosity and concern among residents.
One eyewitness stated, “I haven’t seen anything like this before.”
However, scientific experts have clarified that the phenomenon was not the appearance of multiple suns.
According to online research, previous statemets from scientists and meteorological experts, the event is known as Sun Dogs, or parhelia.
Further findings by The Development Reports explain that the real Sun remains at the center of the formation, while the two side lights are reflections that appear at equal distances from it. The circular halo completes the visual illusion, and under certain conditions, the brightness can be strong enough to resemble actual suns.
Meteorologists emphasize that Sun Dogs are caused by the refraction of sunlight through ice crystals in high-altitude clouds. They stress that the phenomenon is purely atmospheric and poses no danger. Experts also dismiss claims linking the event to climate disasters, solar explosions, or spiritual omens.
The appearance of what looked like three suns forming a circle over Jos is a natural, harmless, and temporary atmospheric occurrence. While visually striking, it is fully explained by science and does not pose any threat to public safety.
