The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a warning for widespread dust haze and reduced visibility across the northern and central regions of Nigeria from December 9 to 11. The agency’s forecast, released on December 8, predicts that the northern and North-Central parts of the country will experience visibility ranging from 1km to 5km, with localized areas seeing visibility drop to less than 1,000 meters.
NiMet warns that the haze will also extend to the southern region, where the weather will be characterized by hazy skies with patches of clouds. Coastal areas will experience early morning mist or fog, which is expected to clear as the day progresses, giving way to sunny skies with occasional cloud cover over inland and coastal states.
NiMet Warns of Continued Hazy Conditions and Low Visibility
On Tuesday, December 10, NiMet warns that the northern and central regions will continue to face dust haze, with visibility remaining low throughout the day. In the south, early morning mist and fog will affect coastal regions, but by midday, residents can expect clearer skies with cloud cover over inland areas.
By Wednesday, December 11, NiMet anticipates improved visibility in the northern regions, but moderate dust haze will still be present in the North-Central states. In the southern region, early morning mist and fog will again affect coastal areas, while inland states will experience hazy conditions with few clouds.
Slim Chance of Thunderstorms and Health Precautions
NiMet also forecasts slim chances of thunderstorms over parts of Cross River, Bayelsa, Lagos, and Akwa Ibom later in the day. The agency advises that people with respiratory conditions, such as asthma, should take extra precautions as dust particles suspended in the air could worsen air quality.
