Morocco is set to introduce a bold new initiative; Digital for Sustainable Development (D4SD), aimed at leveraging digital transformation to bolster its progress on multiple Sustainable Development Goals. 🇲🇦
What is D4SD?
This program, led by Minister Delegate for Digital Transition Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni in partnership with UNDP, is designed to connect Morocco (and the broader Arab-African region) more deeply with the global digital economy. The goal is not just technological advancement, but inclusive growth, improved public services, and enhanced governance.
Key targets & components:
-
Job creation: More than 270,000 new jobs are expected by 2030, focusing especially on youth employment.
-
Digital skills development: Morocco intends to train 100,000 young people annually with essential skills to thrive in an increasingly digital world.
-
Sector priorities: The initiative will support emerging high-impact sectors such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and e-health, while also promoting start-ups and the offshoring industry.
Why it matters for sustainable development:
By integrating digital infrastructure and skills-building into its national development strategy, Morocco is aligning strongly with SDG goals such as quality education, decent work, industry innovation, and reduced inequalities. Effective digital access and better public services also contribute directly to governance goals and to making sure no one is left behind.
Looking forward:
The D4SD initiative is expected to be officially launched at the 80th United Nations General Assembly. Its success will depend on robust collaborations between government, international partners, private sector, and civil society—particularly around ensuring that digital transformation reaches all regions and makes real differences in people’s lives.
