The city of Lagos came alive with energy and inspiration as women from diverse backgrounds gathered for the ninth edition of the Lagos Women Run 2024. This annual event, which promotes health and wellness among women, has evolved into a platform for empowerment, skill-building, and social advocacy.

Coordinated by Tayo Popoola, the Lagos Women Run continues to champion the importance of a healthy lifestyle for thousands of women. This year’s theme, “More Than a Run,” perfectly encapsulated the event’s broader vision. Beyond the race, participants engaged in vocational training programs designed to equip women and girls with income-generating skills. Additionally, the event partnered with a cancer foundation, focusing on children living with cancer, reflecting its commitment to supporting vulnerable groups.

Celebrating Excellence and Inspiration

This year’s ambassadorial team featured trailblazing women who embody excellence and empowerment. Among them were Emem Usoro, Deputy Governor of Operations at the Central Bank of Nigeria; Folake Ani-Mumuney, a marketing expert; and Bolanle Austen-Peters, an award-winning filmmaker and theater producer. Other notable figures included Omosele Tinubu, President of the Anwar-ul-Islam Women’s League, and Dr. Stella Okoli, founder of Emzor Pharmaceuticals.

Elohor Aiboni, Shell Nigeria Exploration’s first female Managing Director, also graced the event, alongside model Ololade Ayelabola, who recently broke a Guinness World Record, and Dr. Awele Elumelu, a marathoner and CEO of AVON Healthcare. Their presence highlighted the diverse accomplishments of Nigerian women, inspiring participants to strive for excellence in their own lives.

A Platform for Unity and Growth

Lekan Fatodu, Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, praised the event’s emphasis on community and excellence. “The Lagos Women Run is more than a race; it’s about women running forward in unity, building connections that can transform their businesses and lives,” he said.

Fatodu emphasized the event’s potential to boost Lagos’ socioeconomic development by fostering collaboration and empowerment.

Advancing the SDGs

The Lagos Women Run actively supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including No Poverty, Zero Hunger, Quality Education, and Gender Equality. By offering skills training, promoting food security, and creating safe spaces for women, the event drives meaningful progress toward these goals.

Winners and Celebrations

Participants competed in categories such as Open and Veterans, with winners taking home prizes including Nike merchandise, medals, and cash awards. The grand prize of 1.5 million naira went to an outstanding competitor, while a Latvian participant under the Veterans category celebrated her 200,000-naira win with her family, underscoring the event’s inclusive and joyful spirit.

The Lagos Women Run 2024 reaffirmed its position as more than just a sporting event—it is a movement for empowerment, community, and sustainable development.
