The International Day of Education 2025 shines a spotlight on the theme, “AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation.” This theme emphasizes the critical need to ensure education empowers individuals to navigate the challenges of an automated, AI-driven future while safeguarding human creativity, critical thinking, and agency.

Technological advancements have brought numerous benefits, but they also present significant challenges. Concerns about artificial intelligence displacing workers and exacerbating inequalities are on the rise. UNESCO underscores education’s role as a bridge to a more equitable future, ensuring individuals possess the skills to thrive in this evolving landscape.

Barriers to Universal Education

Globally, access to quality education remains a significant challenge. According to UNESCO, over 250 million children are out of school, while 763 million adults lack basic literacy skills. In sub-Saharan Africa, fewer than 40% of girls complete lower secondary school, highlighting persistent gender disparities.

In Nigeria, the education system mirrors these global challenges. With an estimated 10.5 million children out of school, systemic barriers such as inadequate infrastructure, teacher shortages, and cultural norms hinder progress. Rural communities are particularly affected, and gender disparities in northern Nigeria exacerbate the issue, leaving many girls without access to education.

Education as a Driver of Sustainable Development

Education is central to achieving the Sustainable Development Goal 4, which seeks to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all” by 2030. UNESCO has been a key driver, addressing issues like digital transformation, education for peace, and teacher empowerment. Organizations like Save the Children also mark this day with campaigns that amplify the importance of education in building a sustainable future.

In Nigeria, initiatives to improve education include government programs targeting rural and underserved areas and efforts to improve teacher training and resources. Expanding access and promoting gender equity are critical to creating a system that equips all children with the knowledge and skills to succeed.

As the world celebrates International Day of Education, the focus must remain on fostering human agency and adaptability. Education should not only bridge inequalities but also prepare individuals to thrive in a rapidly changing technological world, ensuring no one is left behind.

  1. This is really a cause for concern about our world, because this out of school children are going to be part of the same society our well educated children are in and we endanger our nation.
