The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) successfully observed the Presidential and Parliamentary elections in Ghana on December 7, 2024. The ECOWAS Election Observation Mission (EOM), led by H.E. Mohammed Namadi Sambo, former Vice President of Nigeria, commended the peaceful conduct of the electoral process.
ECOWAS deployed a robust team of 21 long-term observers (LTOs) and 120 short-term observers (STOs) to all 16 regions and 216 districts of Ghana. The observers were tasked with monitoring the elections to ensure transparency, fairness, and adherence to democratic principles.
During a visit to several polling units, H.E. Namadi Sambo expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the elections, stating, “The voting process is going on peacefully.” He acknowledged the dedication of Ghana’s electoral commission and citizens in upholding democratic values.
This observation mission is part of ECOWAS’s commitment to promoting credible elections in West Africa. The mission aligns with the ECOWAS Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, which underscores the importance of supporting member states in maintaining democratic stability.
The ECOWAS delegation also engaged with stakeholders, including election officials, political party representatives, and security agencies, to assess preparations and the voting environment. Preliminary reports from observers indicate a generally smooth process, though a detailed assessment will be shared in the final report.
Strengthening Regional Democracy
As one of Africa’s leading regional blocs, ECOWAS continues to play a critical role in fostering democracy and good governance across West Africa. Founded in 1975, the organization aims to promote economic integration, political stability, and sustainable development among its 15 member states.
Through initiatives like election observation missions, ECOWAS reinforces its vision of transitioning from an “ECOWAS of States” to an “ECOWAS of the People,” ensuring peace and prosperity across the region.
