Students of Government Secondary School (GSS) Jabi, Abuja, had the opportunity to explore various career options during their annual Career Day themed “Constructing Your Future.” The event provided the SS1 students with valuable insights into different academic tracks—Sciences, Arts, and Commercial—helping them make informed decisions about their future paths.
A key highlight of the event was an engaging session on Environmental Sciences and Public Health, led by experts from C-Circle Foundation who emphasized the importance of these fields in building a sustainable future. The discussion focused on subject combinations required for various career paths, university course options, and job opportunities available in these sectors. Students gained a clearer understanding of how education aligns with real-world applications and contributes to societal development.
As part of the interactive session, students explored potential careers based on their interests and strengths. Those inclined toward Sciences learned about career paths in medicine, engineering, technology, and environmental sciences. Arts and Humanities enthusiasts were introduced to opportunities in media, law, political science, and education. Meanwhile, students with a passion for business and finance received insights into careers in banking, accounting, business management, and entrepreneurship.
The session on Environmental Science highlighted its role in addressing global challenges such as climate change, pollution, and deforestation. Experts outlined relevant university courses, including Environmental Science, Ecology, Renewable Energy, and Environmental Engineering, which equip students with the knowledge and skills to drive sustainable solutions. Similarly, the discussion on Public Health emphasized its significance in disease prevention, healthcare improvement, and community well-being. Students were introduced to fields like Medicine, Environmental Health Science, Medical Laboratory Science, and Health Education as viable career options.
Beyond career guidance, the session encouraged students to think critically about their interests, research job opportunities, and seek mentorship from professionals. The speakers stressed the importance of keeping an open mind and adapting to emerging career trends that align with sustainable development goals.
Career Day at GSS Jabi was an eye-opening experience for students, equipping them with the knowledge and confidence to make informed decisions about their future. The initiative underscored the importance of education in shaping not just individual success but also the well-being of society. As students continue their academic journey, they are encouraged to see their careers as more than a means of livelihood—rather, as a way to contribute meaningfully to the world.
