The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has reiterated its dedication to advancing regional integration and sustainable development in West Africa. This was highlighted by the ECOWAS Commission President, H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, during the 93rd Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers in Abuja, Nigeria, held from December 12-13, 2024.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Touray acknowledged the challenges facing the region, including limited resources and the need for institutional reforms. He emphasized the importance of addressing issues like migration, economic policies, and sustainable development to improve the well-being of the region’s citizens.
“This Council of Ministers Meeting comes at a time of significant obstacles, but we remain committed to advancing West Africa’s developmental agenda. Progress requires adequate funding and collective efforts to foster peace, stability, and cooperation,” Dr. Touray said.
Dr. Touray also expressed gratitude to Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Minister of Foreign Affairs Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, and the Nigerian government for their unwavering support. He stressed the importance of promoting sustainable development and fostering economic cooperation to ensure a better future for the region’s estimated 300 million citizens.
Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, Chairman of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers and Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, echoed Dr. Touray’s sentiments. He emphasized the need for an enabling environment to support the private sector, which is crucial for economic integration.
“Our governments must work collectively to create conditions that allow the private sector to thrive. We must also address non-tariff barriers, improve border management, and operationalize regional instruments like the ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme to boost intra-regional trade,” Ambassador Tuggar stated.
Ambassador Tuggar also commended ECOWAS for its humanitarian interventions, which have provided critical relief to Member States. He urged governments to strengthen their commitment to regional cooperation and prioritize trade and infrastructure development.
The two-day meeting brought together ministers, heads of ECOWAS institutions, and representatives to deliberate on key issues, including trade, energy, infrastructure, and governance, aimed at improving the lives of West Africans and promoting sustainable regional growth.
With ECOWAS’ renewed focus on collaboration and citizen-driven initiatives, the region continues its journey toward achieving an integrated and prosperous West Africa.
