AfDB Approves $5.3 Million Grant to Boost Public–Private Partnerships in Four African Nations

The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) has approved a $5.3 million grant to strengthen the public–private partnership (PPP) environment in The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Madagascar, and Togo. The project, endorsed in Abidjan on 27 June 2025, will be financed through the Bank’s Transition Support Facility, which provides concessional resources to countries facing fragility and conflict.

The initiative seeks to create a more robust and attractive framework for private sector participation in sustainable development. Its three core components include: enhancing the PPP environment through stronger institutional frameworks and capacity building; increasing private sector involvement, with a focus on local businesses, by guiding stakeholders through the full project cycle; and establishing a dedicated project management unit to ensure effective oversight, strategic direction, and long-term impact.

According to the AfDB, the project builds on previous efforts to improve the business climate and mobilise private investment across the four countries. By operationalising the Bank’s PPP strategic framework, it is expected to drive inclusive economic growth, strengthen infrastructure development, and open new opportunities for sustainable private sector engagement.
